So, what better way to introduce a blog's gear review section then to give you some insight into us - the shearpin family.
First - we like lightweight, functional and minimalist gear. We’ll take paper maps and a compass over a touchscreen GPS, backpacks over drawer systems and a pesticide spray bottle in the sun over a built-in, heated shower system. As a family, we value versatility and simplicity.
Second - for the gear we consider core to getting out and getting home we will spend the money necessary for lightweight, high performance gear that lasts. For the comfort stuff, we are practical, frugal and a bit DIY.
Third - while old Land Rovers are distinctive vehicles we prefer a subtle, low profile approach to road-trippin’ / overlanding. We keep stickers, roof loads and exterior mounted bits to a minimum.

Lastly, we do our best to build proficiency in the use of our gear. While we exercise caution while traveling and in the outdoors - we have done things we’ve been told were dumb, and we have done things that hindsight has told us was dumb. In the shearpin household, we believe our accumulated experience allows for a little more dumb to make it's way into the risk versus rewards equation. Let this be our blanket disclaimer for this website's dumb.
These tenets guide much of our gear purchases - though each of us is guilty of an extravagance or two. If you are of like mind you may find some good info here. If not - these reviews may still be of use, if only for a laugh.
